Choosing Fake Grass
With so many artificial grasses on the market, it can seem a bit of a headache deciding which one to go for. It is tempting to choose the one you like the look of most, but the most important thing is being clear about what, or who, will be using the fake grass.
The look is still very important, and our specialists will bring large samples so you can get a really good idea of how each grass will look in your garden. Types of Artificial Grass
With so many types of artificial grass to choose from, you may wonder where to start. Whilst many look very similar, certain steps in the manufacturing process influence the quality of the grass you choose, and additional features such as UV protection certainly make for a better artificial grass.

Whilst all types of synthetic grass can be called artificial grass, the shorter pile typically used for sport is often referred to as astroturf. The broad make-up is the same, but aside from the obvious difference in pile height, there are other differences that make this type of synthetic grass suitable for heavy and extreme use. As pitches need to allow for falls and stumbles, their base layers are also more involved, often including an additional foam or rubber layer to cushion falls. 3G and 4G Astroturf
Many sports facilities with an astro turf pitch will have had a 3G pitch installed. These have been around for a number of years and have a much shorter pile than garden synthetic grass, and we install these too. However, replacements and new installations are moving to 4G pitches, and for good reason. 3G pitches need much more maintenance than a 4G pitch, mostly because they require an infill, which is brushed over the top of a 3G astroturf pitch to preserve its lifespan. Early versions used sand, but newer 3G pitches use rubber crumb.
Players love being able to play their sport almost all year round on an artificial pitch, but collecting sand or rubber after a session can be quite annoying, as it gets into socks, shoes and feet and needs brushing off afterwards. If players have a session soon after an infill top-up, the surface is also much more slippery, especially with sand infill, and they will grumble until it has bedded down after a few weeks.
Whilst 4G artificial grass pitches are more expensive, they save money over the long term by removing the material and labour needed for infilling. With our lease plans, we are seeing many more organisations move to a 4G astro turf installation.

Choosing Artificial Grass FAQs
How do I choose the best artificial grass for my garden?
It comes down to how it looks and how you'll use it. On a tight budget you will generally get a shorter, less dense grass that won't look quite as realistic as the premium options. Mid-range grasses are the most popular, as they are good all-rounders for children and pets and look very realistic, while our luxury grasses give a lush, dense lawn.
What pile height is best for dogs?
Dog owners generally choose a mid-height 35–38mm grass, as it gives a good balance between looks and practicality for cleaning up. For dogs that like to chew, we have a 37mm grass with a non-toxic PU backing. See our artificial grass for pets page for more.
