Artificial Grass Installation in Shinfield

Shinfield has changed more than almost anywhere around Reading this century. The parish's population rose from about 8,100 in 2001 to over 11,200 in 2011, and new homes have kept coming since. Alongside the old village around School Green, Spencers Wood, Three Mile Cross and Ryeish Green, there are now whole neighbourhoods of new-build houses.

We fit artificial grass in both: fresh lawns for new homes where the turf never took, and replacements for tired lawns in established gardens.

New-Build Gardens That Never Took

It's a story we hear often. The house is new, the turf was laid in a hurry, and within a year the lawn is patchy, waterlogged in winter and cracked in summer. The usual cause is what's underneath: compacted subsoil, buried builders' rubble and a thin layer of topsoil.

Artificial grass solves this properly only if the ground is sorted first. We dig out the problem material, lay and compact a free-draining aggregate base, add a weed membrane and then fit the grass. The result is a flat, firm lawn that drains, which the original turf never managed.

How We Work Out Your Price

Artificial grass is priced per square metre, but a few things move the figure up or down:

  • The grass you choose: budget, mid-range and luxury grasses differ in pile height, density and feel
  • The size of the area: larger lawns usually cost a little less per square metre
  • The shape: rolls come in fixed widths, so curves and odd shapes mean more offcuts
  • What's there now: turf, gravel, paving or decking each need different preparation
  • Edging: sleepers, timber or a flush finish against paving

Over time, an artificial lawn usually works out cheaper than a real one once you count lawn feed, weed killer, watering and your own time. Our cost guide explains the figures.

Near the Loddon

The River Loddon forms the eastern and southern edge of the parish, and the land slopes west towards the Kennet valley. Gardens on lower ground can stay wet for long spells, so we check the drainage on every survey and set the depth of the base to match.

Shinfield Artificial Grass FAQs

Can you replace the turf on a new-build garden?

Yes, and it's one of the most common jobs we do. We lift the new turf, dig out any builders' rubble or compacted subsoil we find, then build a proper free-draining base before the grass goes down.

How is the price worked out?

We measure the area and add an allowance for wastage, which depends on its shape and the width of the roll. The price per square metre covers removing the old surface, the sub-base, membrane, edging, the grass and fitting. Our most popular grass starts from £75 per m² supplied and fitted. More on our prices.

Why is a small area dearer per square metre?

Some costs are the same whatever the size: getting the team and materials to you, and the wastage from cutting a roll to fit. On a small area those costs are shared across fewer square metres.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

We take no payment until the job is finished and you're happy with it.
