Wallingford is one of the oldest towns on the Thames. King Alfred enclosed it with earthworks in the ninth century, William the Conqueror's army crossed the river here in 1066, and the Treaty of Wallingford ended the Anarchy in 1153. - Dig out: the old turf and soil come out to the depth your ground needs
- Base: a compacted, free-draining aggregate layer, then a weed membrane

- Finish: brushed up, tidied and offcuts left for you or taken away

Near the River
Wallingford's medieval bridge crosses the Thames beside low-lying flood meadows, and gardens on lower ground near the river can stay wet for long spells. A real lawn in that position is often more moss than grass. Artificial grass on a deeper, free-draining base copes far better, and after high water it only needs the silt brushing off and a rinse.
